Paris, Oct 23: World Cup winner Marcel Desailly rescued Chelsea from a shock defeat with a late equaliser as the holders were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Copenhagen in the European Cup Winners' Cup second round, first leg clash at Stamford Bridge yesterday. The French midfielder struck three minutes into injury time with a superb shot from the edge of the area in the final attack of the game to cancel out Bjarne Goldbaek's goal for the visitors 10 minutes earlier.
Lazio's hopes of reaching the third round suffered a setback when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Partizan Belgrade.
Chelsea's multi-million pound strike force had missed a hatful of chances before Goldbaek seized on a mistake by Dennis Wise and fired home an unstoppable 20-yard drive in the 80th minute.
The goal came entirely against the run of play on a frustrating night for the glamorous West London club, who struggled past Swedish part-timers Helsingborg in the first round. But the equaliser was no more than Gianluca Vialli's team deservedin a one-sided match that should have been settled in their favour long before the interval. They completely dominated the opening 45 minutes and had six shots on target.
Former Liverpool goalkeeper Michael Stensgaard was in inspired form as wave after wave of Chelsea attacks was repelled.
The best of the early chances fell to Uruguayan midfielder Gustavo Poyet who was just inches wide with a header from Zola's corner.
Pierluigi Casiraghi's volley after 31 minutes produced a superb stop from Stensgaard, who also saved well low down from Poyet and tipped another Casiraghi effort round the post.
The Danes then stunned the Stamford Bridge crowd with a crucial away goal. Chelsea skipper Wise miscontrolled Marcel Desailly's pass just inside his own penalty area and the ball fell to Goldbaek who smashed a superb right foot shot into the far right hand corner from the edge of the area.
But with the referee looking at his watch and reaching for his whistle, Desailly fired a shot through a crowded area thatsomehow found its way into the roof of the net to the uncontained relief of the home crowd. Chelsea are aiming to become the first club ever to successfully defend the trophy.
