Sutar, Kulkarni star in NCC win

MUMBAI, OCT 25: A fine century by Rajesh Sutar and a five-wicket haul by Nilesh Kulkarni helped National Cricket Club trounce Bombay Gymkhana by 210 runs in the third round of Police Shield Invitation Cricket Shield tournament, sponsored by Jayantilal Khandwala & Sons and Khandwala Securities at the Islam Gymkhana.

Sutar's (127: 13x4, 4x6) added 174 with opener Wasim Jaffer (95: 10x4, 1x6) for the second wicket which saw National amass 390 for nine in 70 overs. Bombay Gymkhana in reply, could manage only 174. Left-arm spinner Kulkarni wrecker-in-chief claiming five wickets for 48 runs in 24.2 overs.

In another match, defending champions Victory upstaged Parsee Gymkhana by four wickets. Medium-pacer Abey Kuruvilla came up with another sterling display claiming 5-69 but his efforts went in vain as PJ Hindu Gymkhana lost to MCA Colts by three wickets.

Group A: Parsee Gymkhana 199 in 48.5 overs (Ajay Kadam 31, Arun Shetty 94; Maroof Khan 4-61) lost to Victory CC 205-6 in 62.5 overs(Sanjeev Jadhav 93, Mahindra Ingle 71; Dinesh Sabnis 4-77) by six runs.PJ Hindu Gymkhana 175 in 55.4 overs (Raja Adartao 59, Tushar Zaveri 35, Sandeep Dahad 4-53, Faizal Shaikh 5-54) lost to MCA Colts 181-7 in 57.4 overs (Kiran Pawar 54, Amol Muzumdar 45, Abey Kuruvila 5-69) by three wickets.

Group B: Islam Gymkhana 149 in 39.4 overs (Nilesh Masurkar 42, Hakim Khan 3-34, Iqbal Thakur 4-51) lost to CCI 150-5 in 44 overs (Sameer Dighe 31, Rajesh Sanghi 30) by five wickets.

National 390-9 in 70 overs (Rajesh Sutar 127, Wasim Jaffer 95, Amit Dani 44, Mayur Vichare 3-34) beat Bombay Gymkhana 174 in 61.2 overs (Rahul Sagar 33, Abhishekh Jaywant 33, Nilesh Kulkarni 5-48) by 210 runs.

St Andrew's for Akola

Brian Fonseca will lead St Andrew's Junior College to the Inter-Districts Junior Collegiate football tournament at Akola from Oct 27-29. The team leaves for Akola tonight, having qualified for the event as Junior Collegiate champions of Mumbai.

Coach and former international Timothy Pereirahopes to do one better than runners-up position achieved two seasons ago.

Swami nets winner

A lone goal by N Swami enabled ONGC to down Saki Village Boys 1-0 in the MDFA-conducted Harwood Football League at the St Xavier's ground, Parel, today.

Saki Village Boys, comprising of young players, played at a fast pace with accurate passes. Their forwards played well but missed many chances, many of them from close range.

ONGC had just once chance and capitalised on it through Swami.

Earlier in Division III-B, IIT, Powai beat Khalsa Gymkhana B 6-0. S N Jha shone for the Powai side with his accurate passes. Ravinder Kumar (3), Santosh Kumar (2) and Shantanu Chatterjee were the scorers.

Lazio failed to turn up for their Division III-B tie against Fatima Parish.
