SURAT, Oct 25: Surat resident Gulambhai Panwalla has lodged a complaint before a judicial magistrate demanding the arrest of owners of a Tamil Nadu-based fireworks company as well as a Surat-based fireworks dealer for carrying pictures of the Kaba Sharif in Mecca and the Gumbade Bidraa at Medina on their labels. In his complaint, Panwalla called the printing of pictures of holy Islamic shrines on firecracker boxes ``provocative and intentionally meant to arouse communal hatred''. While the court will take up hearing of the complaint on Monday, the police commissioner has ordered an inquiry into the allegation.
Panwalla, who said he bought the firecrackers from a shop in the Ruwalla Tekra area of the city, asked for arrest warrants to be issued against the owners of Jaykaar Fire Works in Sivakasi and Narayandas Chunilal Tobaccowala, a fireworks shop-owner at Ruwalla Tekra in the Mahidharpura area of the city.
The complainant has also sought the arrest of the owners of Jaykaar Fireworks and Tobaccowala under the Explosives Act, alleging they were not permitted to manufacture and sell fireworks.
Addl CP C H Surendra Prasad, however, said police officials who had carried out raids at the trader's premises in the city had failed to find any such cracker labels.
The Mahidharpura police, meanwhile said that no person was arrested in the case as no written complaint had been registered.
