Karachi, Oct 26: Ijaz Ahmed's hard fought century and a gritty 75 from Moin Khan enabled Pakistan draw the third and decisive cricket Test against Australia, but the tourists won the first series on Pakistan soil after 39 years on Monday. Before skipper Mark Taylor's 1-0 series victory, only Richie Benaud had succeeded in beating Pakistan in Pakistan in the 1959-60 season when Australia recorded a 2-0 win in a three-match series.
Pakistan, needing 419 on the last day to square the three-match series, was 78 for four before lunch and the Aussies were right on top for their second victory.
But Ijaz played a superb match-saving knock, scoring an unbeaten 120 off 230 balls in 327 minutes, hitting 16 fours as Pakistan finished at 262 for five with Inzamam-ul-Haq not out on 21.
``It's great feeling to beat Pakistan after long time,'' said Mark Taylor, who won the Man of the Series award for Australia.
Ijaz and Moin played resolutely and kept Pakistan's unbeaten record of 33 matches intact at the NationalStadium. They have won 16 matches here while the remaining 17 were drawn.
Ijaz, who scored his career-best 155 against Australia in the drawn second Test at Peshawar, and Moin, stuck in the middle and waited for loose deliveries on a slow track.
Crisis man Moin gave fine support to Ijaz, who brought up his fifth Test hundred against the Aussies by lifting off-spinner Gavin Robertson for his 14th boundary of the innings.
Moin was caught in the deep by Stuart MacGill off part-time spinner Darren Lehmann with only 12 overs remaining in the day. He made a match-saving 153 for the fifth wicket with Ijaz in 186 minutes and hammered 10 fours in his 75-run knock.
Both batsmen had their share of luck with Ijaz being dropped by skipper Taylor on two Australia was still in with a chance before tea but Mark Waugh could not hold onto a sharp chance off Moin at second slip with Pakistan at 140 for four.
Earlier, Colin Miller grabbed three wickets in just 22 balls before lunch which ensured either a draw or anAustralian victory.
It would have been five down for Pakistan had Taylor not spilled an edge off Ijaz at first slip off paceman Glenn McGrath when the batsman had scored just two.
