Khanvilkar claims opening day's honours

Mumbai, Oct 26: Sunil Gavaskar XI skipper Omkar Khanvilkar's fine all-round display stood out on the opening day of the Mumbai Cricket Association's u-16 Selection Tournament for the Shatkar Trophy that got under way at various grounds of the city today.

Khanvilkar, who topscored with 55 runs (4x4, 1x6) held the innings together alongwith Sammy Salaria (41: 5x4), in Gavaskar XI's modest first innings score of 151 all out against Chandu Borde XI at the PJ Hindu Gymkhana. However, the Gavaskar XI bowlers struck back with a vengeance that saw Borde XI being shot out for a paltry 95 resulting in a 56-run lead for the former.

Off-spinner Parag Madkaikar did most of the damage claiming four wickets conceding a miserly 13 runs in his 12 overs. He was well supported by Khanvilkar who captured three wickets for 16 runs.

At the Karnatak Sports Club ground, Deodhar XI were struggling at 49-4 after having restricted Dilip Vengsarkar XI to 140.

Vengsarkar XI medium-pacer Nikhil Kulkarni (3-22) returned thecompliments after his counterpart Darshan Bhoir (5-35) had emerged the wrecker-in-chief for Deodhar XI.

Gundappa Viswanath XI opener Mohan Rawle's unbeaten knock of 79 (11x4, 1x6) has almost ensured a first innings lead for his team over Eknath Solkar XI at the Islam Gymkhana.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, Solkar XI batsmen were all at sea against the spinners. Off-spinner Siddarth Bhatkar claimed the bowling honours with a haul of 5-49 while left-arm spinner Manoj Giri (3-31) emerged the second best as Solkar XI were dismissed for 169.

Rohit Salunke (43) and Harshad Rawle (40) were the only two Solkar batsman who showed some resistance.
