Kannan, Uzma top ranked Indian juniors

MUMBAI: Vjay Kannan of Tamil Nadu and Uzma Khan of Andhra Pradesh, both ranked 69 in the world, are the top ranked Indian boy and girl on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) list.

Sanzaruz Zaman of West Bengal is the second highest ranked Indian (junior) at 105 followed by Manoj Mahadevan of Tamil Nadu (112), Kedar Tembe of Maharashtra (179) and Karnataka lads Ravikiran Bhat (234), Akshay Vishal Rao (296) and Dipesh Rao (298). Fernando Gonzalez of Chile is the top ranked junior in the world.

The next top six Indian girls on the list, headed by Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia, are Gautam Sheetal of Delhi (139), Radhika Tulpule of Maharashtra (225), Tamil Nadu's V Kameshwari (474), Jahnavi Sunderarajan (491), Radhika Mandke of Maharashtra (499) and Geeta Manohar of Karnataka (667).

Arthi beats Nona

Indore: Eighth seeded Arthi Venkatraman of India came from behind to beat compatriot Nona Wagh on her way to pre-quarterfinals of the BridgestoneITF women's tennis circuit at Yeshwant Club here today.

Other results (first round): Shalini Thakur (Ind) bt Priyanka Contractor (Ind) 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, Karishma Patel (Ind) bt Deepa Engade (Ind) 6-1, 6-1; Gautam Sheetal (Ind) bt Tarminder Grover (Ind) 6-2, 6-0; Jaslin Randhawa (Ind) bt Simmi Rani (Ind) 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Team selection

CHANDIGARH: Selection of the Indian ladies golf team for the Asian Games will be made on the basis of performance at Sixth Punjab Open Amateur Ladies Golf Championship for Max India Cup which begins tomorrow at the Chandigarh Golf Course.

Madhu Brar, captain of the ladies section at the Chandigarh Golf Club said more than 50 players were expected to participate in the championship. Two participants, one from France and another from America, would give an international flavour to the championship, she added.

Bihar retain title

CALCUTTA: Bihar retained their title in the 14th Senior National Karate Championships at the Sports Authority of India Complex,winning eight of the nine gold medals at stake. Chandra Prakash alone took five gold, three of them individual.

Bengal grabbed the remaining gold. In fact, it was Bihar-Bengal one-two in most of the events with the winners displaying superiority in skill. Two events were not contested due to lack of participants.

HC declines

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court today declined to stay a meeting of the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) executive committee but allowed a rival faction of the UP Olympic Association (UPOA) to participate in the meeting scheduled for the day.

Justice Anil Dev Singh said since the IOA had to discuss the team selection for the Asian Games starting in Bangkok on December 6 at the meeting, it would be inappropriate to stay it at this stage.

Junior badminton

CHENNAI: The 54th Junior Inter-state and 23rd Junior National (boys' and girls') badminton championships will be held here from November 18 to 23. Giving this information, the organising secretary of the ChennaiDistrict Badminton Association said the qualifying rounds would be held on November 17.
