Textile processors' duty fixed
Surat: Textile processors will have to pay 75 per cent of the scheduled duty of Rs 1.50 lakh per chamber for October, according to a decision reached at a meeting of the South Gujarat Textile Processors' Association and the Commissioner of Central Excise (Surat 1) on Monday. The commissioner explained that shops that were sealed in textile markets were allowed to trade. The commissioner agreed that only Rs 1.50 lakh per chamber will be collected from processors whose production exceeded the target by 20 per cent. The processors requested the commissioner to take up with the state government their demands for more relief in view of the severe recession the industry is passing through.

Student dies
A IXth standard student of I P Mission Girls' High School, who had immolated herself after being scolded by a teacher for consuming gutkha, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday. Noorjahan Shabbirbhai, 14, had doused herself with kerosene before setting herself afire on October 9. She was being treated at the Ashaktashram Hospital. Sub-inspector of Chowk Bazaar Police Station R D Dube is investigating the case.

Retreat organised
The Christian community organised a three-day retreat at the Mother Mary Church in Bhestan on the occasion of Diwali. This was followed by another retreat at St Xavier's High School. More than 3,000 people belonging to various castes, cultures and religions benefited from the spiritual exercises, according to Fr Jayanti Macwan.

Talent search
More than 440 youths belonging to 23 different institutions in the Bardoli taluka are participating in the 31st Youth Talent Search Competition that was recently inaugurated at Varad Sarvajanik School in Rayam.

Memo submitted
Vadodara: Students of the Faculty of Law, M S University, on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Anil Kane demanding that the admission procedure for the diploma course in Law be initiated at the earliest. The students further stated that the university authorities were not required to abide by the guidelines of Bar Council of India to do so.
