Kadekar lets Karnataki off the hook

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Oct 27: Abhay Kadekar, of Pune, almost caused an upset. However, when it mattered the most, his inexperience came in the way. He committed a mistake, which is common among amateurs during periods of over-excitement, thus letting the top seeded Abhay Karnataki off the hook in the second round of the State Junior Chess tournament at Manohar Mangal Karyalaya here today.

On the top board, Karnataki (white), an Elo rated player saw his gameplan go haywire. A first year B.Sc student of Fergusson college, Karnataki tried to launch an early attack on the King's side. Kadekar, however, employing the short castling on the other side left Karnataki's attack fizzle out.

Receiving an early jolt, Karnataki opted to wait and watch, thus playing a safe game. However, he took too long a time to play the 12th move (Rc8), which was no use to him in the latter part. ``I should have developed other pieces. That was an unnecessary move,'' he admitted.

Kadekar, an 11th standard student of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose school, Yerwada, by that time had a good command over the game as he inched towards Karnataki's King. However, Kadekar, excited by dreaming of an early win, overlooked a crucial checkmate position on the 32nd move (Qb2), allowing the top seed to escape defeat. Kadekar, thereafter, played all irregular moves in disappointment and resigned soon.

In the girls section, tenth seed Amruta Mokal brought about the only upset of the day, defeating fifth seed Ashwini Kulkarni in 40 moves. Ashwini, being a pawn up in the initial stage and enjoying a slight advantage in the ending game, however, weakened her defence by playing Bishop on `c6' instead of `g4'. Later, coming under time pressure, she resigned to hand over a full point to the Jog High School lass Amruta.
