French flavour to end India's isolation after nuclear tests
India and France will drive another nail into the coffin of New Delhi's post-Pokharan isolation, when they begin a formal strategic dialogue in New Delhi today. Cautious optimism is in the air in the government as Principal Secretary Brajesh Mishra and French President Jacques Chirac's special envoy Gerard Herrera get down to business.
Sonia chooses Pawar over "loyalists"
In a surprise development, Sharad Pawar has had his way in the selection of the Congress candidates for the Nov 13 Council elections in Maharashtra and thereby hangs a tale. The list of candidates "unanimously" sent by the MPCC to the Congress President has been changed to accommodate Pawar nominees and even MPCC chief and Pawar's bete noire Prataprao Bhosale and Ashok Chavan, son of SB Chavan, were axed.
No replacement for me, claims Patel
Unruffled by the dissidents' campaign to unseat him, Karnataka Chief Minister J H Patel has declared that he saw no one in the Janata Dal replacing him and said that the no-confidence motion to be moved by the Congress against his government will be defeated.
