BANGALORE, Oct 28: The Opposition Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka have decided to move a no-confidence motion against the J H Patel Government in the Assembly session commencing tomorrow.
A decision to this effect was adopted at the parties' respective legislature party meetings here today.
Congress leader M Mallikarjuna Kharge told reporters here that though his party was aware it did not have the requisite strength to topple the Patel Ministry on the floor of the House, the idea in moving the motion was to ``expose the government's failures.''
Kharge said his party would defeat the Government's designs to curtail the Session and press for discussion on vital issues, including the flood havoc in the State.
He denied that the Congress was tying to `bail out' the Chief Minister by moving the no-confidence motion.
BJP president B S Yediyurappa said even if the House took up a discussion on the Congress-sponsored no-confidence motion, his party would support it.
Meanwhile,Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief Dharam Singh on Wednesday urged Chief Minister J H Patel to either ``ensure proper governance'' or quit, as, ``the ongoing crisis in the ruling Janata Dal has led to political instability in the State".
Participating in a `Meet-the-press' programme organised by the Bangalore Reporters' Guild here, Singh said bickerings in the ruling party were no longer the party's internal affair, after 42 JD legislators openly demanded Patel's resignation at a meeting addressed by former prime minister H D Deve Gowda near the City railway station on October 18. ``The ruling party MLAs have taken the issue to the streets, and as such, it is no more an internal matter of the party''.
He also ridiculed Patel's statement that he would prove his strength in the Assembly and sought to remind Patel that in the political party system, the leadership issue should be decided at the level of the legislature party.
He also wondered how Patel, who ``at will, announced the date forthe JDLP meet'' in the wake of the crisis in the party, later put it off on the pretext of attending the Cauvery River Authority meeting.
