SURAT, Oct 28: Bardoli Congress councillor Farid Gajia has been booked under the Prevention of Anti Social Activities Act following an order issued by District Magistrate R M Shah.At the height of the communal clashes over inter-community relationships in the violence-prone small town, right wing organisations had alleged that Gajia was providing money to Muslim youths to encourage them to elope with or marry Hindu girls.
Gajia was also accused of beating the son of Bardoli unit Congress party president Daji Bhandari when he reportedly parked his two-wheeler close to a mosque some weeks ago. Though it appeared to be the case of intra-party rivalry, the tussle soon acquired a communal tinge.
The violence saw two vehicle show rooms, including one belonging to Harshad Shah of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh being torched by mobs. Arson was also committed in other parts of town; several cabins and larrigallas were set on fire. Gajia was alleged to have played a principal role in the violence.
After being arrested, Gajia has been sent to the Sabarmati jail.
