New meet record by V Remya

CHANDIGARH, Oct 28: Defending champions, Calicut University, Calicut, women's team asserted their supremacy in the meet by pooling in two more gold medals to their tally on the second day of the All India Inter-University aquatic championship being held at Panjab University Swimming Pool.

V Remya was the star performer for the Calicut team. She not only won the gold medal in the gruelling 800 metres freestyle event with a new meet record of 10:20.94 but also anchored her team to a gold in the 4 X 100 metres relay.

The previous record of 10:25.17 in the 800 metres was held by Sumisha of Calicut, who was pushed to the second spot in the race today. Sumisha touched the wall in 10:31.19 while Sumy Cyriac of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam was third in 10:54.40.

However, Calicut varsity had a set back in the women's 100 metres butterfly event when M Usha was beaten by Tashina Singh of Bangalore University to the second place. Tashina won the gold in 1:11.46, which was her second in the meet. Yesterday she claimed first position in the 100 metres backstroke event with a new meet record.

M Usha clocked 1:12.18 for a silver medal. Bronze went to Rakhi Mehra of Delhi University with a time of 1:14.28.

In the men's group, Advit Pandit of Madras University continued his good run by winning the second gold of the meet in the 200 metres freestyle event with a time of 2:11.59. He won first place in the 100 metres backstroke event yesterday.

Jaspreet Singh of Punjabi University, Patiala won silver in 2:11.93 while K Rajesh of Calicut got the bronze in 2:12.59.

A Rameshan of Calicut missed his third gold of the meet when he lost narrowly to Millind Kapikare of IIT, Mumbai, in the 100 metres butterfly event. Milind touched the wall in 1:05.47 while Rameshan clocked 1:05.54.

J Romesh of Madras University was third in 1:06.35.

Calicut men's team was also relegated to the second spot in the 4 X 100 metre relay by Mumbai University, Mumbai, who clocked 4:06.95. Calicut team timed 4:10.59. Madras University was third in 4:12.86.
