31-day long L&T strike called off

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Oct 29: The 31-day-long strike by workers of Larsen and Toubro was called off on Thursday following an agreement between the employees' union and the management over the fate of six workers, whose dismissal had trigged the agitation. The workers will resume work from Friday.

The workers had struck work since September 28 seeking the reinstatement of six workers, who were dismissed by the company a couple of days before that for unruly behaviour and intimidation.

The negotiations between the management and the workers started in the evening and continued late in the night. A senior L&T officer told Express Newsline later that according to the compromise formula, two workers would remain dismissed; two would be suspended pending inquiry; and two would remain under suspension for four days and allowed to resume duty after they submitted letters of apology.

The workers have promised to increase their productivity over the next five months in response to the management's stand that productivity had gone down abysmally. The management, on its part, will give incentives for productivity.

The engineering major reportedly sustained losses of Rs 50 lakh every day and found several important works being put on hold due to the strike.

The trouble had erupted at the annual general meeting of the workers' cooperative on September 26. Some workers raised demands -- which the management claimed were not listed on the agenda -- and later allegedly gheraoed and roughed up senior officers of the company, leading to a police complaint being lodged against the six workers. The company then suspended the six workers.
