SURAT, Oct 29: City Police Commissioner Maniram, using his powers under the Bombay Police Act (BPA) has banned the use of weapons of all kinds, all inflammable substances, burning of effigies, taking out rallies and making provocative speeches, among other prohibitory orders, for a fortnight, beginning Friday.Warning that those violating the orders would face imprisonment upto one year or fine or both, he said in a statement issued on Thursday that the ban would be in effect till November 13.
The directive has been issued as per the powers of the commissioner under section 37(1) of the BPA, as a precautionary measure due to the forthcoming festivals.
Among the seven points listed in the prohibitory orders, all persons -- including arms licence holders -- have been banned from carrying weapons, explosives or other items that can cause injury.
However, all government officials, including the police, and those authorised by the police commissioner to carry arms are exempted from the ban, the statement added.
