MUMBAI, OCT 30: The fate of 54 temporary employees at the University of Mumbai will be decided in the Management Council (MC) meeting scheduled for Saturday. The issue is of much importance for the cash starved university (its estimated budget deficit for the year 1998-99 is Rs 2.29 crore). Already burdened with 600 unapproved staff, the varsity flouted a government resolution (GR) of June 2, 1998, which had ordered a freeze on all fresh recruitment.
In the last seven months the varsity recruited the 54 on temporary basis in installments mainly in class IV category and allowed them to continue even after their 180 days' temporary period was over. Most are children of varsity's permanent staff.
Now the MC will deliberate on whether one son or daughter of the university staff can be employed in the university and whether those already working be confirmed in their respective posts.
Worse, some employees who have over 10 years' service left have more than one child employed in the university thus denyingemployment opportunity for children of staff who are just retiring or already retired. Such recruitment has ignored criteria of eligibility and competition.
Senate member Amarjit Singh Manhas pointed out, ``The university should have been fair in at least allotting jobs to children of the staffers who will be retiring shortly.''
Vice Chancellor Snehalata S Deshmukh told Express Newsline, ``I may not be able to consider the matter of the continuance of the temporary staff because of the zero budget compulsions.''
