NEW DELHI, October 30: Residents of Vasant Kunj have given up on onion. They have vowed not to buy onion till prices come down. And they want none of the government's subsidised onion. Neither are they keen on subscribing to Siti Cable, who are also offering onion at ``concessional rates''. The residents assembled at Pocket D, Sector IV today to launch their ``movement for the benefit of Delhiites''. They said: ``Onion is not an essential part of nutrition. We can do without it''.
Several organisations like Common Cause, Senior Citizens Welfare Association and All India Federation of Teachers' Organisation have pledged their support to the Vasant Kunj residents. The residents also said: ``Black marketeers and hoarders are playing havoc. We can no longer continue to depend on the government''.
For those who still can't do without onion, the vegetable continues to be priced at Rs 40-45 in the open market. In Azadpur wholesale prices varied between Rs 25-40 even today.
At the government's subsidy outlets and Mother Diary counters, customers cannot buy more than 2 kg of onion per week. And only ration-card holders are allowed to buy the vegetable at these places.
