Abhay goes down to Udayan

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Oct 30: Top seeded Abhay Karnataki and No.3 Vikrant Chole found themselves at the receiving end, in their eighth round ties, losing to second seeded Udayan Bapat and Prakash Golecha respectively in the State Selection (U-19) chess meet organised by Buddhibal Kreeda Trust, Pune at the Manohar Mangal Karyalaya here today.

The result of today's ties have thus turned tables on the leader-board as Udayan and Prakash head the table with seven points.

On the top board, Udayan playing with white pieces began with the King's pawn opening to which Abhay opted for the speculative Caro-Kann defence. On the eighth move Abhay sacrificed his Bishop to rescue two pawns. By the 23rd move Abhay's position became weak and was forced surrender his Queen for two smaller pieces and in subsequent moves lost the pieces won and resigned.
