CHANDIGARH, Oct 30: With a view to containing the state units from fielding overaged players, the Handball Federation of India has decided to start registeration of the players from the sub-junior level with immediate effect. Federation vice-president Ravinder Talwar said here today that this important decision was taken at the general body meeting of the HFI held recently at Rohtak. The issue was discussed in detail before taking the decision. HFI president R L Anand presided over the meeting.The registered players would be issued laminated identification cards by the federation. Besides the date of birth, the card would also contain the tournaments the players had played, if any. The registeration would be perodically renewed. However, the registeration number will remain the same. Only registered players would be allowed to compete in the recognised tournaments.
Another important decision taken at the annual general body meeting was `regrouping' of the system for the National championships. Talwar said that instead of a five-day affairs it would now be a six-day Nationals. The teams would be divided into six pools. One team from each pool will qualify for the quarter-final knockout stage. Defending champions and runners-up would be seeded straight into the quarter-final.
The federation has also rescheduled the national calendar in view of the postponment of the Manipur National Games from October, 1998 to February 1999.
The Junior National Championship has been allotted to Uttar Pradesh Handball Association which is conducting it at Agra from November 20 to 24.
The Punjab Handball Association has taken the responsibility of conducting the Senior National Women's Championship and the Federation Cup in March next year.
The Sub-Junior Nationals for boys and girls would be hosted by Jammu and Kashmir Handball Association at Srinagar from January 5 to 10 next year. Vijayawada would be the venue of the Senior National Championship which will be organised from December 24 to 29.
Anoop claim title
Anoop KC and Shikha Sharma claimed the men's and women's titles in the Chandigarh state third ranking table tennis tournament which concluded at Sector 23 Indoor Hall.
Anoop outplayed Amod Dixit 21-13, 21-17, 18-21, 18-21, 21-19, in a well contested match. In an equally exciting women's encounter, Shikha got the better of Barkha KC 21-19, 21-4, 14-21, 21-17, to take home the women's crown.

PU in final
Punjab University and Patiala Police will lock horns in the finals of the 11th Open Mohali football tournament being held at Phase-8 at SAS Nagar. In the first semifinal, PU beat Ropar Police 3-0. Sukhbir, Jaswinder and Shiraz were the marksmen for the winners. In the second semifinal Patiala cops defeated Chandigarh Coaching Club by a solitary goal. The match winner was scored by Sanjeev in the 20th minute of the second session.
