MUMBAI, Nov 1: Several lakh rupees were raised today for cancer patients in the city at a day-long drive organised by the Canadian High Commission.The drive began with a walk at Priyadarshini Park, which had nearly 500 participants, including 150 students of the Cathedral School and an 85-year-old man.The walk was in memory of Terry Fox, a young Canadian who died due to cancer in 1980. After his death, the foundation bearing his name raised $180,000,000 for cancer research.
In the afternoon, Shiamak Davar held a free performance for 600 cancer patients at the TIFR auditorium. Noting the happiness on the faces of the minor cancer patients during the performance, Rekha Sapru of the Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) said: ``This is just what the children needed. They think about the disease all the time. This has been a performance that they will never forget.'' Canadian ambassador Petwe Walker, said: ``We first came up with the idea of the drive 5 months ago. And it seemed very ambitious. But it isamazing what can happen talented people come together.'' Shiamak Davar said: ``This is a cause I feel very deeply for, as my uncle died of leukemia and I had a close friend with breast cancer,'' he added.
But for the city's beautiful people, the highlight was the gala night held at Homi Bhabha auditorium. Among those who attended were theatre personalities Rahul DaCunha, Boman Irani and Sabira Merchant, veejay Sophiya, Suchitra Pillai, model Madhu Sapre, socialite Aarti Surendranath, Kailash Surendranath, Queenie Singh, Nina Pillai and singer Mehnaaz.
The compere for the evening was Ruby Bhatia, and Shiamak performed all his favourite numbers. Designer Manish Malhotra said: ``It is wonderful that a consulate is doing so much for cancer patients.'' Chief guest Sunil Dutt called cancer "a global pain" and said he hadn't heard of any other consulate taking up a similar cause. But what most were waiting for was the auction of the engagement outfit worn by Kajol in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
