Sukh Ram denies special favours

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SHIMLA, Nov 1: Former Communication Minister and HVC president Sukh Ram today lashed out at Rashtriya Loktantrik Morcha (RLM) president Mulayam Singh Yadav for his remarks that the Vajpayee Government was showing special favours to Sukh Ram. He categorically denied having asked the BJP for any favour either.

Talking to newsmen here, Sukh Ram alleged that remarks of Yadav showed his ignorance of the fact that the BJP, instead, was harassing him and his family members. ``What to talk of farours, the BJP has not even reciprocated for sacrifices, which his party has made to bring the BJP to power in Himachal and then provide stability to the Dhumal Government,'' said Sukh Ram.

Reacting sharply to RLM president's charges that the Vajpayee Government was harassing former Bihar Chief Minister Laloo Prashad Yadav and had left Sukh Ram to go scot-free, HVC president said most of the charges against him, which he still insisted were politically motivated, were in the courts and there was no question of getting any favour.

Sukh Ram also appeared upset with the Central Government and alleged his son Anil Sharma, a Rajya Sabha member, had not been allotted official accommodation and earlier accommodation, which he (Sukh Ram) had as Lok Sabha member was forcibly vacated. ``Eviction parties were sent twice and at a time, when only family members and kids were in the house. Is that a favour which the government has given,'' he questioned.

Former minister recalled he had resigned from the Dhumal Government immediately after he was advised by the Prime Minister to do so.``There had been tremendous pressure on me from the party not to resign since charge-sheets were not yet finalised in the court. Had I defied the Prime Minister, continued in the ministry and later contested the Lok Sabha elections from Mandi, I would have won, and the BJP besides the Mandi Lok Sabha would have also lost the three assembly seats. The fallout would have been obvious i.e. collapse of the dhumal government'', he maintained.

Former minister, referring to charges against him said there was a big conspiracy against him and cash to the tunes of several crore found at his residences, did not belong to him. ``This FIR was filed against me, when I was abroad and I will tell the country at an appropriate time as to whom the amount belonged,'' he informed newsmen.

Sukh Ram also complained that a section of media had played up the charges against him without verifying the facts and now charge-sheets being filed against him had not reflected any thing extraneous except the property which his income tax returns show. Another case filed recently against him, also had an affidavit of the government saying that no irregularity was committed in award of the cables.

Sukh Ram came down heavily against former minister and Congress member Rajesh Pilot and challenged him and also former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh to offer themselves for a CBI probe into the charges against them. He alleged Pilot had awarded a cellular phone licence to a firm in Calcutta to favour his industrialist friend, whose helicopter he (Pilot) had been using extensively. Former minister alleged Pilot also owned properties in Delhi, lucknow and Chandigarh. ``I just want to ask these leaders, Pilot and Virbhadra Singh as why are not they willing for a CBI probe to follow example set up by their own party leader and MP Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, '' he questioned.
