No oomph in US polls, no Monica either
The United States goes into a midterm election on Tuesday with a largely apathetic electorate unmoved by the sex scandal involving President Clinton and only marginally provoked by the media-charged political atmosphere. But for the barrage of advertising on television and radio, there is little sign of electioneering anywhere across this vast country.

Fresh polls in Sindh, says Pak daily
Pakistan has reportedly decided to hold fresh elections in the violence-plagued province of Sindh, which was placed under federal rule after suspension of the regional Assembly last week. The decision to hold fresh polls has been taken in principle in the light of a report submitted by a ministerial team, comprising foreign minister Sartaj Aziz and education minister Syed Ghous Ali Shah.

1,000 feared dead in wake of Mitch
Up to 1,000 people are feared dead after part of a mountainside, weakened by rain, fell onto five hamlets in northwestern Nicaragua in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. The tragedy is likely to raise the number of storm victims to well above the current official figure of 402.
