Pune upstage Mumbai for title

MUMBAI, Nov 4: Pune won the under-14 inaugural Samna Trophy cricket tournament title when they defeated Mumbai A by 30 runs in the 40-over final at the MIG ground, Bandra, today.

Pune received a cash prize of Rs 25,000, while Mumbai collected Rs 15,000 for the runners-up spot.

Pune, after being put into bat, did well to score 176 for six in the stipulated 40 overs. Prashant Naik won the top-scorer award with 38 off 43 balls. He was involved in a 45-runs partnership for the third wicket with Chetan Suryavanshi (30).

Earlier, opener Sanket Puranik contributed a well-made 35. Thereafter, Amit Medankar scored a quicksilver 22 off 15 balls with two fours.

Mumbai leg-spinner Parag Madkaikar and off-spinner Tanmay Joshi took two wickets each.

Mumbai, set to score at 4.5 per over, began well with their opener Siddhesh Kamal (15) and Sanil Rane (27) putting on 30 runs in just 7.3 overs. This was the only big partnership in the Mumbai innings. Thereafter, Mumbai lost their wickets at regularintervals.

At the one end, man-of-the-match and Mumbai captain Karim Zindani held the fort. He came in to bat when Mumbai were 79 for three. He was the eighth batsman to be out when he was run-out by a direct throw from Yogesh Takawale. Zindani made a well-struck 58 in 68 balls with six hits to the ropes.

Thereafter, Mumbai were bowled out for 146 in 35.3 overs. There were four run-outs in the Mumbai innings. Pune's Parag More and Darshan Baldota took two wickets each.

Adity Sharma was declared man of the tournament and received Rs 2,000, while best batsman Chetan Suryavanshi (Pune), best bowler Tanmay Joshi (Mumbai A), best wicket-keeper Karim Zindani (Mumbai A) and best fielder Yogesh Takawale (Pune) received Rs 1,000 each along with a trophy.
