CALCUTTA, Nov 4: For a generation of Asians reared on the exploits of Michael Jordan, basketball is all about power forwards, shooting guards and pressure defence. All these and some more are likely to be show-cased in the tournament that represents the best of Asia in the game when the 15th edition of the Asian Basketball Confederation Championship for junior men (under 18) gets underway at the Netaji Indoor Stadium on Thursday. The nine-day gala assumes added significance in view of the sixth World Championship for junior men to be held in Portugal from July 15 to 25, 1999. Three top teams in this championships will get direct entry into the Worlds where they join 13 teams that have already qualified.
Five-times winners China, six-time winners The Philippines, Korea, Chinese Taipei who all have a traditional following of the game have a very professional approach too. So much so that the Chinese coach hinted that this was his country's `B' team.
For hosts, India, it is a question of taking it matchby match. The first hurdle is the one to cross -- the opener against Malaysia.
