BJP announces first list of 50

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, November 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced the first list of candidates for 50 out of the 70 Assembly constituencies in Delhi late tonight. The list was released even while the talks for seat-sharing with the Akali Dal (Badal) and Om Prakash Chautala's Harayan Lok Dal were on.

The first list was released by BJP national general secretary and in-charge Delhi elections, Venkaiah Naidu, which was finalised by the Central Election Committee. And there were neither too many surprises nor too many new faces in the list, as earlier suggested by the BJP leadership.

Out of the 50 seats for which the candidates were named, BJP has sitting MLAs in 35 seats and 27 of them have been renominated. Only eight of them have been replaced for various reasons. Two women and one Muslim candidate have been nominated.

The open revolt by the rank and file during the four-day state-level candidate selection meetings and the rampant factionalism in the BJP Delhi unit were said to be reasons behind the renomination of most of the sitting MLAs. The Delhi ministers have also been renominated in their respective seats.

Four south Delhi constituency seats -- Jangpura, Malviya Nagar, Hauz Khas and R.K. Puram -- are among the 20 seats that are yet to be decided. The rest of the list is likely to be released by 3 p.m. tomorrow. Delhi Chief Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is going to contest from one of the south Delhi seats, is yet to choose her constituency. The other candidates will only be nominated once Swaraj makes up her mind. Likewise, the Jangpura seat is being kept aside for the Akali Dal.

The candidate for the Shalimar Bagh constituency which has been vacated by Sahib Singh Verma is also to be decided tomorrow. Earlier in the day, the BJP Delhi Pradesh president Mange Ram Garg and the Delhi CM Swaraj represented the state in the party's meeting with the Election Commission.
