Govt under pressure

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
GANDHINAGAR, Nov 5: Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel has said that the government would inquire into how a huge stock of imported onions turned out to be rotten at the APMC's Juhapura market on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

``I have just come from Bharuch and I came to know about this only through newspaper reports. The government will inquire into how rotten onions came in,'' the chief minister told reporters here this evening. Some 110 tonnes of onion a part of the 400 tonne consignment imported from Iran has arrived at the AMPC market.

Meanwhile, even as the powerful oil millers' lobby and Saurashtra farmers started pressuring the government over restrictions on groundnut seed and oil movement, the deliberations on the subject ended inconclusively at the Cabinet sub-committee meeting here today.

The seven-member committee formed last week to take decisions on all civil supplies issues will meet again tomorrow to discuss this issue and measures to arrest the spiralling prices of essential commodities, including salt and onions.

Leaders of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, the BJP's farmers' wing, Saurashtra oil millers and traders have threatened to call for an indefinite closure of marketing yards in the region if the restrictions on inter-state movement of groundnut seeds and oil are not withdrawn.
