AHMEDABAD, Nov 5: The Shamlaji police station of Sabarkantha district filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists for creating disturbances during a religious fair in the town on Wednesday.Sub-inspector S N Patel has registered case against six to seven VHP activists, who have not been named, for violating prohibitory orders at the scene and abusing some volunteers of Manav Kalyan Trust.
Defending Wednesday's incident, Durgavanini co-ordinator Malaben Rawal said that her organisation was all for removing superstitions but it would not tolerate any interference in religious rituals.
State VHP president Pravin Tagodia has denied that VHP activists had threatened and intimidated some NGO members. He said his organisation was against superstitions and in favour of protecting ancient tradition. He also claimed that nobody was exorcised and the practice was long stopped. But Sophiya Khan of the Vikas Adhyayan Kendra insisted that they had witnessed the forcible immersion of semi-nude women. She and other members would submit a memorandum to Governor Anshuman Singh and chief secretary L N S Mukundan and make presentations before Human Rights Commission and ask for a Central inquiry.
