And...Hauz Khas goes to Sushma Swaraj

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, November 5: The BJP chief ministerial candidate Sushma Swaraj will be contesting the November 25 poll from Hauz Khas. The candidates for the last 16 seats was approved by the BJP Central Election Committee late in the evening. The party's other ally, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) decided not to contest the coming elections but would support the BJP from the outside. Announcing the list BJP, general secretary Venkaiah Naidu said: ``The party has decided to give three outer Delhi seats -- Mahipalpur, Bawana and Najafgarh -- to (Om Prakash) Chautala's Harayan Lok Dal''.

In the confusion, Chautala walked off with the cake, despite stiff opposition from Sahib Singh Verma. The former CM till the end resisted the entry of another Jat leader in the outer Delhi villages. Singh is also yet to name his successor for the Shalimar Bagh seat. The candidate for this seat will be announced tomorrow.

Hauz Khas sitting MLA Rajesh Sharma vacated the seat for Swaraj, which is said to be a safe seat for the BJP. Mostly comprising the higher-income group, the constituency has neither been too badly affected by dropsy nor the spiralling prices. With Swaraj going for Hauz Khas, the former transport minister of Delhi, Rajendra Gupta managed to retain his Malviya Nagar seat and Bodh Raj the R.K. Puram seat. The BJP fielded its own Sikh candidate Vir Bahadur Singh in Jangpura, a seat the Akali Dal refused to accept.

Similarly, the Vishnu Garden seat went to the Delhi Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee member Tanwant Singh, and Gandhinagar to another Sikh candidate Savinderjit Singh Bajwa.

Two women candidates, Sashi Prabha Arya and Sarvesh Sharma, have been nominated from Rajouri Garden and Ghonda respectively. Tourism Minister Surendra Pal Ratawal retained Karol Bagh and Baljit Nagar went to Yogendra Chandolia. Ex-AVBP general secretary Bholanath Vij has been nominated for Model Town and Hari Krishna from Sadar.
