"Ram jyoti" not on hospital premises: Panel

Yogindra Mohan
PATIALA, Nov 6: A three-member fact-finding team of the health department has in its report to the Director of Health Services stated though it did not find ``Ram Jyoti'' in the surgery ward of the Mata Kaushalaya Hospital, inquiries made by the committee had revealed that there was ``Ram Jyoti'' in the ward sometime back, it was reliably learnt here today.

Director of Punjab Health Services had directed the civil surgeon of Patiala to conduct a probe into the reports that a ``Ram Jyoti'' was the installed in the Mata Kaushalaya Hospital premises. Since the civil surgeon was on leave yesterday, the assistant civil surgeon constituted a three-member team of doctors for the purpose.

The team in its report has reportedly stated that during its visit to the MKH yesterday, it found that a ``Ram Jyoti'' was installed in the room allotted to the warden of the nursing hostel situated on the other side of the road facing the hospital. However, the report has also stated that the team was told that a ``Ram Jyoti'' was there in a ward of the hospital, some time back, informed sources told ENS here today.

Punjab Minister of State for Health Inderjit Singh Zira had ordered the civil surgeon to conduct a probe into reports that a ``Ram Jyoti'' had been installed in the premises of the MKH.

The three-member fact-finding team comprised Dr Rakesh Gupta, assistant civil surgeon, Dr S.K. Sharma, deputy medical commissioner, and Dr M.R. Chhabra, district training officer.

Meanwhile, during a visit to the MKH today, ENS found that there was a flame in the nursing duty room adjoining the surgery ward in an almirah where some pictures of gods had also been displayed.

Mkh Medical Superintendent Prem Lata Sood said that the fact-finding team had visited the hospital yesterday and had found that the ``Ram Jyoti''was installed in the room allotted to the nursing hostel warden of the hospital. She asserted that the flame in the duty room adjoining the surgery ward was not ``Ram Jyoti'.

Dr M.S. Randhawa, convenor of the Mata Kaushalaya Hospital Bachao Committee, said that a flame from Gharam, the native village of Mata Kaushalaya, mother of Lord Ram, was brought following a meeting of the committee which was also attended by prominent religious leaders. The flame was taken round the city in procession and the effigy of Ravana had been set ablaze from a flame lighted from this holy flame. This had been put in the room of the warden of the nursing hostel on her request.

He said that the Hospital Bachao Committee had already written to the Punjab Government that it wanted to build an all-religion temple at the place where a building of the new judicial complex was now coming up on the MKH campus. The committee maintains that the new judicial complex is coming up on land belonging to the hospital.

Inquiries revealed that the Jyoti had been taken and put up in a room adjoining the hospital stores on the campus for some days before being shifted to the surgery ward. This was, however, disputed by Dr Randhawa.
