Licensing norms for ISPs set, tariffs freed
The Government has announced detailed guidelines for allowing entry of private Internet Service Providers (ISPs), keeping in mind Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's November 7 deadline. The licence for ISPs would be for a 15-year period and no license fee will be levied for the first five years.

Power cess to generate 18,000 mw
The Government is aiming to offer power on demand by the year 2010 by creating fresh capacity of 80,000 MW which will be financed by a cess on generation. A national transmission grid will soon be put into place to ensure seamless flow of power across the country.

Trade deficit doubles in H1
Negative export growth coupled with higher imports widened India's trade deficit by a whopping $ 4.99 billion in the first half of this fiscal year, double that of the $ 2.5 billion registered in April-Sept 1997. The latest monthly trade data showed that exports continued its down slide registering a negative 3.28%, while imports soared by 10.06% in dollars terms in the first half of this fiscal.
