NEW DELHI, Nov 7: The BJP today denied AIADMK chief Jayalalitha's allegation that there had been a ``secret deal'' between Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on the Cauvery water issue. ``There is no secret deal but a perfect understanding among the four states and the Centre and the people of these states are happy,'' BJP general secretary M Venkaiah Naidu said. The entire country was happy that the long-standing Cauvery dispute had been resolved to the satisfaction of all parties concerned.
Jayalalitha had said yesterday that Karunanidhi had signed the agreement only to secure an assurance from the Centre that the TN government would not be dismissed. The Cauvery River Water Authority (CRWA) was of little benefit to the Cauvery delta farmers in TN, she said.
The denial comes even as Jayalalitha stepped up her demand for the dismissal of the DMK government.
Claiming that the recent deposition of a senior Tamil Nadu police official before a Central tribunaladmitted to LTTE activities persisting in the State, she said that the deposition offered ``enough evidence'' for dismissal of the Karunanidhi government without any delay.
``Activities of the outlawed LTTE have registered a manifold increase and terrorism and anti-national activities are becoming rampant in Tamil Nadu ever since Karunanidhi took over its administration,'' she said in a statement in Chennai.
The AIADMK chief said that smuggled goods were seized from LTTE cadres along with guns, pistols, wireless equipment and global positioning systems while several militants were arrested in various places in the State. Jayalalitha cited references made in the Jain Commission report and the serial bomb blasts in Coimbatore early this year to claim that there was ``sufficient evidence'' that anti-national forces had launched and intensified their activities since Karunanidhi became chief minister.
Meanwhile, Venkaiah Naidu said that BJP President Kushabhau Thakre would release an ``election statement''on November 10 incorporating all the issues that need to be debated and discussed by the people before the November 25 assembly polls. The Prime Minister, Home Minister L K Advani and about 20 other top leaders of the party are to campaign in the four election states.
The BJP intends to go on the offensive against the Congress by making the Romesh Sharma affair and criminalisation of politics its main campaign issues. ``Let the Congress deny that Romesh Sharma was an AICC member,'' Naidu said.
Corruption, threat to internal security and pseudo-secularism will also be part of the party's election campaign. The BJP, he said, would highlight the increase of corruption and criminalisation during Congress and United Front rule.
Besides citing the findings of the Vohra Committee, the BJP would also focus on the Sushil Sharma tandoor murder and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.
