Taipei maintain winning run

Roopa Rao
CALCUTTA, NOV 9: Chinese Taipei, the team which defeated Kazkhakstan and Korea in the league, maintained their winning form in the quarter-final league which got under way Monday in the Asian Basketball Confederation Championships here at Netaji Indoor Stadium.

They defeated Iran 96-79 in a rough-and-tough match and it was not their fault that Iran failed to watch their previous match against Korea so that they could be better prepared.

Qatar scored a facile 84-59 victory over The Philippines in a match that saw quite a bit of rough play while Japan provided a whiff of fresh air with a neat game against Malaysia which they won 97-55 (Half time:47-34).

Chinese Taipei, refreshed after a day's rest, played to a plan and Iran failed to break the sustained pressure defence put up by their rivals. Not only did they play hard but saw to it that Iran did not get a toehold either in the aerial game or on the ground. When Iran's guard Mohammad Reza Esla left with five fouls, they lost their only player who wascapable of driving in.

Hosts India touched the century mark in the tournament while trouncing Bangladesh 102-58 in the classification league match. Gajendra Singh's 21 points (3x3) and Des Raj's 18 (1x3) helped India build on a 47-25 half-time lead. Mohd Raseeduzzaman (28) was Bangladesh's main scorer.

Hong Kong China prevailed over Kuwait 69-46 in another match with Heung Chun Keung scoring 28 points (3x30 and Tam Wai Yeung tallying 11 points. Hasan Saqer and B Taher totalled 15 points apiece for Kuwait.

South Korea scored over Lebanon 85-60 mainly through the efforts of Kim Dong Woo (22 points, 2x3) and Yang Dong In (17). For Lebanon Hantas Mohammad (19, 3x3) and Younes Tarer (11) were the main contributors.
