CHANDIGARH, Nov 9: Last year's fifth position holder, Western Air Command capitalised on the opportunity that came their way to score a one goal-win over South Western Air Command to lift the trophy in the week long Air Force Inter-Command hockey championship which concluded at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here today.Though the match began at a dull note, it took an exciting turn in the later part of the first half when SWAC increased the pace and forced two penalty corners within a span of four minutes (29th and 33th). But both went abegging.
However, on the counter attack WAC's Baldev Singh, Daljit Singh and Sushil moved in tandem and were awarded a penalty corner just before the lemon break. Basant pushed the ball while MJS Prakash took the hit which went past the goalkeeper Raj Prakash (1-0).
The second half was played in the WAC's half but SWAC's attacking line were unable to level the score. Nirbhay Singh's shot was padded by Ajit Gopal in the 40th minute while in the 43rd minute a penalty corner was also squandered by Ramesh Kumar.
WAC got another opportunity to increase their margin in the 45th minute but Dharmesh Singh's reverse flick went inches over the bar. That was the only time WAC came near scoring in the second session. In the remaining period they were engaged in containing the opponents who went all out to level the score.
WAC's Daljit Singh was also shown green card for an unsportsman-like conduct on the ground.
Two golden chances for SWAC in the 55th and 66th minute of play and penalty corners in the 54th and 63rd minute were a clear indication of their domination but the team could not deliver the goods when it mattered.
