BMFC strikes down Thai team

Saibal Bose
CALCUTTA, NOV 11: Playing inspired football, Bengal Mumbai Football Club (BMFC) defeated Air Force team of Thailand 3-2 in a Group B IFA Shield quarter-final League at the Salt Lake Stadium here today.

The Mumbai team have thus accumulated three points from two matches so far.The game today stood in sharp contrast to the first match of the Shield, with both sides displaying swift and organised football. The wet ground caused by rains yesterday had little effect on the pace of the game, the players getting used to the conditions quite early. A self-goal going against Air Force in the 19th minute acted as a catalyst in spurring the teams to a better performance.

The goal came off a faulty clearance by Air Force mid-fielder Chonlatis Kruttieng. BMFC's Abdulatif Serriki failed to connect a Sheikh Sanjib pass from the left. Kruttieng, attempting a clearance, pushed it into his own goal.

Caught off-guard, Air Force increased men up front and went on the offensive. Kruttieng of course, put in that much extraeffort and was rewarded six minutes later after a combined move down the middle. Forward Worawit Thaworwun's powerful shot from inside the BMFC box hit the cross-piece and returned to play. Kruttieng rushed in to put it past BMFC goalkeeper Gumpe Rime.

Air Force went into lead in the 29th minute through a spot kick. Sanjay Dayal, over-zealous in his task of preventing a goal, tripped Thoworwun inside the box. Songserm Maperm converted with a calm head.

BMFC were not daunted at having to concede the lead. Instead, they stepped up the attack and reaped the benefits three minutes later. Skipper Alok Das displayed his lethal long-rangers with a power-packed 30-yarder which kissed Air Force goalkeeper Bancha Nunart's hand and the cross-piece before entering the net. It was 2-2 and both teams were on even ground.

BMFC took control in the second half with Sheikh Sanjib, James Singh and Abhay Kumar missing the target by inches. It was left to Alok Das to win the match for his team. The BMFC skipper, who is histeam's choice for dead-ball situations, curled his free-kick over the wall in the 80th minute of the game. The ball dipped at the right time hit the under-side of the cross-piece before going in Mohun Bagan play Mohammedan Sporting tomorrow.
