SURAT, Nov 11: Baroda Rayon Corporation employees, who were on protest for the past week against irregular payment of arrears and salaries, staged a demonstration in front of the police commissionerate on Wednesday evening and handed over a memorandum to the commissioner, criticising the arrest of five employees on Tuesday by the Udhna police. The five were sent to judicial custody today. The memorandum said that the arrest of the five agitating employees was an attempt to crush the union activity. Police Commissioner Maniram said that the arrests were made following a written complaint and warned that the police would take stern action if the employees resorted to violence.
Maulesh Patel, the Akhil Bharatiya Audyogik Kamdar Sangh (ABAKS) secretary, who led the delegation criticised the arrest of the five employees and denied that they had resorted to violence and threatening Udayprakash Trivedi, who lodged the complaint with the police. Police Commissioner said that he had no objection to peaceful protests to get their demanded but the police would not be mute spectators if they resorted to violence. The delegation was accompanied by three BJP corporators from Udhna area Kanti Joshi, Suresh Varodaiya and Champak Patel.
Although the major problem is payment of salaries and other monetary benefits, the arrest of five employees was caused by rift between two divisions in the union. There was a scuffle and heated arguments within the employees that led to a complaint being lodged in the police station. The five were produced in the court today and sent to judicial custody, the Udhna police stated.
Among other demands that the delegation made were reopening of all cases filed against the Baroda Rayon Corporation in the past six months, and the police should take their side of the story before ``misusing its powers'' and take strict action against those who attempt to disrupt their peaceful agitation.
