Defending champions Punjab Police joined Indian Airlines (pool A), Punjab and Sind Bank and Border Security Force (pool B) in the semi-finals of the 15th Indian Oil All-India Surjit Hockey Tournament today. Leading British cricket commentator Geoff Boycott faced an uncertain financial future today as media organisations distanced themselves from him after he was found guilty of beating up his lover. A French court ruled yesterday after a retrial that the 58-year-old former England and Yorkshire cricket star did batter his former girlfriend, Margaret Moore, 45, during an argument about money in 1996.
Ranji Trophy
Former India speedster Bhupinder Singh (Sr), now the manager of the Punjab team, admits that his team has had a smooth run so far in the current North Zone Ranji Trophy Championships in the current season. Despite a reverse in the season's opener against Himachal Pradesh in the one-dayer at Mandi last month, Punjab have recorded outright wins in their next three games against Himachal, Jammu and Kashmir and the Services to top the zone with 24 points.
Sandeep wins
Sandeep Kirtane caused the first upset of the Futures Tennis Circuit singles event today defeating seventh seed Harsh Mankad 6-0, 6-4. The other seeds sailed through to the third round without any hiccups.
