SGGS-26 win handball title

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Nov 11: In a thrilling league encounter, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Chandigarh, outclassed Panjab University Campus 24-21 to win the title in the Punjab University Inter-College men's handball championship which concluded at PU Campus here today. Both the teams were 11-11 at the break.

SGGS-26 played according to a plan and did not panic under crunch situations. They kept their cool and beat PU Campus in their own game.

On the other hand, PU Campus players were unimaginative in their moves when the going got tough and were unable to take advantage of the home field.

In the first session both the teams were neck and neck. In the second half too, the teams fought a pitched battle to gain the upper hand. But the match took an exciting turn when PU's Rashpal missed a penalty in the later part of the second session. On the counter-attack SGGS-26's Gursharan put his team ahead 21-20.

The lead was short lived as Parvesh made it 21-21 through a penalty. With time running out the Campus players missed another opportunity to grab the lead as Subhkaran missed to score while Hardeep converted for SGGS-26 (22-21), which was the turning point of the match as PU Campus, thereafter lost their grip over the match. Another good move by SGGS's Harinder consolidated the lead when he beat goalkeeper Kamaljeet (23-21). And a combined effort of Gursharan Singh, who got 8 goals for the eventual winners and Naresh in the last 40 seconds further increased the lead to 24-21.

Parvesh (8) and Subhkaran (4) scored for PU Campus.

Government College, Ludhiana scored a emphatic 22-14 win over SD College in their last league outing to win the second position in the meet. Earlier, they lost to SGGS-26, 23-25.

Sarabpreet (7) and Rajesh (5) were the main scorers for Ludhiana team. Devinder Singh got 5 points for the losers.

PU Campus, however, beat SD-32, 28-23, to get the third place.
