Punjab face "real test" against Delhi

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, November 11: Former India speedster Bhupinder Singh (Sr), now the manager of the Punjab team, admits that his team has had a smooth run so far in the current North Zone Ranji Trophy Championships in the current season. Despite a reverse in the season's opener against Himachal Pradesh in the one-dayer at Mandi last month, Punjab have recorded outright wins in their next three games against Himachal, Jammu and Kashmir and the Services to top the zone with 24 points.

``But the team's real test starts tomorrow against Delhi. So far, we have done quite well with a new-look team. We hope to continue the good work,'' he added after the team's practice session at the Kotla this afternoon.

``In the absence of our strike bowlers Bharti Vij (who has taken an NOC to play in Calcutta) and Aashish Kapoor (playing for Rajasthan this year), the present set of bowlers are inexperienced. Even Harbhajan has played only half-a-dozen international games. Yet, I am satisfied with the performance of our youngsters so far,'' he said.

Punjab's batting will revolve around the experience of Navjot Sidhu, skipper Vikram Rathore, wicketkeeper-batsman Pankaj Dharmani, Reetinder Sodhi and Dinesh Mongia. Harvinder Singh, Sandeep Sharma and Lalit Kapoor will share the new ball while Harbhajan Singh, Navdeep Singh (left-arm) and Sandeep Sawal (leg-spinner) and Tejinder Singh (left-arm), all raw hands, taking care of the spin department.

Delhi, too, have had a satisfactory outing so far, having collected 21 points from three games. Robin Singh, Amit Bhandari, Ashish Malhotra, Sandeep Angurala and Rahul Sanghvi have performed creditably while Virender Sehwag, with his all-round efforts has been the find of the season. Delhi are likely to field the same team that played in the earlier one-dayers. Robin Singh, who had an upset stomach, will play only if he reports fit on the morrow.
