Congress wants probe into BJP rebel's murder

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, Nov 12: The Congress today demanded a thorough inquiry into the brutal killing of Samata Party candidate Ved Singh from Delhi's Nangloi assembly constituency and said there should not be any political interference in the probe as some people with high connections might be involved.

Party spokesperson Mani Shankar Aiyar told reporters that the incident was the outcome of the atmosphere of violence and hate generated over the last five years by the BJP Government in Delhi.

Asked why the party was apprehensive of involvement of some senior BJP leaders in the incident, he said there have been incidents in the past in which a former Chief Minister's family was involved.

He also recalled the statement of Parliamentary Affairs Minister and BJP leader Madan Lal Khurana on the issue.

Demanding that the inquiry should be impartial, he alleged that the BJP Government had attempted a `cover-up job' as regards alleged links of Delhi Chief Minister Sushma Swaraj with alleged Dawood frontman RomeshSharma.

Replying to a question, Aiyar said the party was confident the party was confident that the Election Commission will be able to conduct free and fair poll in Delhi notwithstanding `mafia raj of BJP''.

Meanwhile, the RJD today demanded resignation of Union Home Minister L K Advani owning moral responsibility for Ved Singh's murder.

RJD national secretary Raj Singh Mann also warned that if the Centre did not take immediate action against `criminal elements' in the capital and initiate a CBI inquiry into Singh's murder, assembly elections will not be free and fair.

``Delhi's law and order is directly under the Home Ministry. Advani as Home Minister should take responsibility for Singh's murder and quit'', he told reporters here.

Mann, who is contesting the polls from an East Delhi constituency, said Ved Singh's murder was a clear case of politics-crime nexus and demanded that the government ensure security to the candidates and tighten security to ensure peaceful polls.

Demanding that theElection Commission issue directions against use of private security by candidates, he also appealed to the police in the capital not to show `discrimination against any party under influence of threats'.

BJP man dies of heart attack

The Election Commission today adjourned polls in Mundawa assembly constituency in Nagaur district of Rajasthan following death of BJP nominee Ram Deo Choudhary last night.

Chief Election Commissioner Gill said the new date for polling will be notified soon. BJP being a recognised national party can nominate a fresh candidate for the seat within seven days while other candidates would remain in the fray.

Under the recent changes in the Representation of People's Act, death of a candidate belonging to a recognised party need not result in countermanding of the election process.
