Sahib avoids victim's house in Mundka

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, November 12: Mundka is a divided village, as residents trade charges over who really killed Ved Singh. While one group strongly supports the gang-war theory, Ved Singh's family will not back down from naming Sahib Singh Verma's brother Azad Singh as the culprit.

There was a flurry of activity in Mundka this afternoon with the much-awaited visit of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh. However, he only stopped at the house of Ishwar Singh, who was injured in the shootout and died at Apollo Hospital this morning, to offer his condolences, and drove past Ved Singh's home.

Weakened by the one-day-old fast and the allegations against his family, Sahib Singh said he avoided going to Ved Singh's house. ``Unless the real culprits are arrested I will not go there. Let the truth first come out. I wanted to go there yesterday, but the way they were flinging allegations against me -- how could I go there? I don't blame them, they are being misguided''.

There was tension not only in the village but also in Ved Singh's house, where family members are constantly debating what to say to the press. His father, Chaudhary Bhim Singh, shouted at anyone who spoke out of turn. ``These people have come to interview me. They want my version, and I am the head of this house and the victim's father. I know everything.'' When a relative tried to talk to a television crew, the father erupted, ``All of you leave this room. I am the only one who will talk''.

Asked what he felt about Sahib Singh's visit, he said: ``Of course we are upset that he didn't come here. But you go and ask him. He thinks we are accusing his family, but now we are not saying anything. We don't need to. His brothers have a bad reputation anyway. And what is all this about a fast? Even I can give up food, but will it achieve anything?'' Then, realising that he had spoken too much, he changed his stance. Once more politically correct, he folded his hands and said: ``I only want justice''.
