Student's suicide sparks tension in Jaipur

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
JAIPUR, Nov 13: Tension gripped parts of the city today as students held demonstrations to protest against self-immolation by a student, even as the authorities ordered a two-day closure of all educational institutions in the state and assured to hold an inquiry into the death.

Agitated students held demonstrations in Rajasthan University campus, Gandhi Nagar, Bapu Nagar and Rambagh areas, chanting anti-government slogans to protest the death of Nishant Bhardwaj, who committed self-immolation here on November nine, police said.

In Rambagh, the students pelted stones at police vehicles without injuring anybody, deputy inspector general of police A K Jain said, adding five people were arrested in this connection.

The government ordered a two-day closure of all educational institutions in the state in view of a bandh called by the university students union following Bhardwaj's death yesterday after a brief hospitalisation in Delhi.

The first year M.A. student ended his life by pouring kerosene andsetting himself ablaze to demand early declaration of results and sacking of vice chancellor V I Rajagopal.

Rajasthan University Chancellor and Governor Justice N L Tiberewal has said that an inquiry would be conducted into Nishant's death and delay in the announcement of results.

Controller of examinations Virendra Singh Shekhawat has been replaced by P L Raigar. Bhardwaj's body was taken to his native Khera village in Aligarh district for funeral, Jain said.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students held mourning meetings. Addressing the gathering, Pratap Singh Khachariyavas, former university students union president and candidate for coming assembly elections from Jaipur, demanded resignation of Chief Minister Shekhawat and his cabinet colleagues. He also demanded ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh to Bhardwaj's family and initiation of case against Rajagopal.
