Rajasthan wakes up, closes all colleges

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
JAIPUR, NOV 13: Apprehending angry and violent protests by students, the state government promptly closed down all colleges throughout the State today. An over-cautious administration in Jaipur district also closed down schools. As for the Rajasthan University, it was closed for two days following the death of 20-year-old Nishant Bhardwaj, who set himself ablaze protesting the delay in the announcement of results.

A group of National Students' Union of India (NSUI) members pelted a State Roadways bus with stones at the Gandhi circle here. There were several protest demonstrations in Alwar, Bharatpur, Ajmer, Kota and Dausa, There was heavy deployment of police personnel in riot gear at Raj Bhawan, the State Secretariat, colleges, hostels and the residence of former Vice-Chancellor VI Rajagopal. Inspector-General of Police (law and order) Namo Narain Meena summoned an emergency meeting of key police functionaries.

In the first reshuffle after Nishant's death, Vice-Chancellor Kanta Ahuja said that Controllerof Examinations BS Shekhawat had been told to proceed on long leave and deputy registrar PL Regar had been asked to take charge.

Nishant's body was taken to his native village, Marhaila, in Aligarh district, UP, for cremation. Chancellor Justice Tibrewal said that an impartial inquiry would be conducted into the delay in announcing the results and into Nishant's death.

About 500 students, led by former union presidents Somendra Sharma and Pratap Singh Khacharia, organised a condolence meeting at the spot where Nishant set himself ablaze. The current president of the student union, Hanuman Beniwal, could not make it due to a death in his family.

Rajasthan BJP president Raghuvir Singh Kaushal termed the death ``most unfortunate'' and asked the Opposition not to ``use it for political motives.'' The State Congress demanded the resignations of Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and higher education minister Lalit Kishore Chaturvedi for their failure to intervene and set the university working inorder.
