NEW DELHI, November 13: The elections seem to bring out the innovative best among the contestants. From garlands of onions to literally sweeping their constituency free of corruption, Delhi's electoral candidates are doing their best to translate local issues into gimmicks. For instance, the Congress party's star campaigner Sunil Dutt refused a garland of flowers in Baljeet Nagar, where he was campaigning for Congress candidate, Krishna Tirath. Instead, he chose to accept a string of onions offered to him by a resident.
Another candidate, who is trying to cash in on the onion issue, is Parvesh Garg, a BJP rebel contesting from Geeta Colony. Garg, who took out a balloon procession in Laxmi Nagar today, promised to provide onions at Rs 5 per kg to every voter at their doorstep.
Surender Kumar, an Independent candidate from Vishwas Nagar, on the other hand, took to the streets with a broom in his hand and swept the roads. His message was that he will ``throw out the garbage heaps of corruption, nepotism and inept administration created by the BJP''.
Gopal Chauhan, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) nominee from Ramnagar constituency, on his part has `turned down the offer' of his workers to weigh him in blood. Instead, he has said that he would donate blood to weigh `his' leaders Kanshi Ram and Mayawati.
The voters, too, realise that this is the right time to get a hearing from the electoral candidates. The Bharatiya Bengali Hindu Muslim Morcha, held a meeting at Pant Marg and declared that their brethren will vote for only those who will provide them with free latrine and bath facilities.
