Seen together: Basu, Sonia call for a front against BJP
Some shape and form to the new alignment of secular forces against the BJP-led bloc emerged in West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu's Nehru Memorial Lecture. Basu blasted the BJP's policies, especially on communalism, directed a fair bit of criticism at the Congress, applauded the Left's efforts in Bengal, Kerala and Tripura and ended by hoping that utopia would come in the next century in the form of a socialist order.
Pakistan for mediation
Pakistan has sought to introduce third-party mediation in the bilateral dialogue with India, saying that "inflexibility and rigidity'' on New Delhi's part over the last nine days meant the time had come to seek help from elsewhere.
Talbott urges restraint
The United States has asked India and Pakistan to halt production of fissile material for nuclear weapons, and sign and ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) "as soon as possible''. ``What we need now is to make a breakthrough in strategic restraint by the two neighbours'' Talbott said.
