Mumbai to host Asia Cup TT tournament

THANE, NOV 14: India will host three international tournaments next year, Table Tennis Federation of India general secretary Mool Chand Chowhan informed after the Association's annual general body meeting held here yesterday.

Mumbai would host the Asia Cup, dates for which would be announced later, Bangalore the Junior Asian Championships and Goa will be the setting for the Asian Veterans' Championships. The last two events are scheduled for September, Chowhan informed.

The postponed sub-junior championship for this season will now be held from February 1-8 at Surat. Scheduled to held in December, the event had to be put off because of the floods that ravaged Gujarat in September. A newly constructed multi-purpose hall will be the venue for the sub-juniors. A tournament, to be held on December 18 and 19, will involve the top 10 men and women, and a total prize money of Rs two lakh.

Chowhan also informed that the 1999-2000 senior National Championships will be held in Orissa, the junior championship atChandigarh and the sub-junior championship in Kerala.

Other decisions taken at the AGM were those pertaining to India's Asian Games participation and age tests conducted for the first time ever, during the ongoing Western India championships here.

Players found overage by tests conducted during the last two days will be suspended for a year, Chowhan informed. The maximum period of suspension would be three years. Chowhan added that the list of players found to be overage would be made known in a day or two.
