KOLHAPUR, Nov 17: Ruling Tararanee Aghadi lead by Shiv Sena supported MLC Mahadevrao Mahadik received a severe set-back in the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) mayoral election, when its women candidate Mayawati Ashokrao Bhandare was defeated by Kanchan Shivaji Kawale, candidate of Opposition Shahu Swabhimani Aghadi of the Congress loyalists here today. In a straight mayoral contest Kawale, who became the 23rd mayor of Kolhapur city, polled 37 votes while Bhandare polled 34 votes in the 72 members KMC House. One corporator could not participate in the voting due to some court matter.
Outgoing Mayor Shivajirao Kadam was in the chair during the mayoral election process. Meanwhile, in the deputy mayoral post election, Tararanee Aghadi candidate Jaising Avaba Raikar defeated Shahu Swabhimani Aghadi candidate Ramesh Shamrao Purekar by a big margin of 26 votes. Raikar polled 46 votes, while Purekar polled 25 votes. Newly elected Mayor Kawale declared Raikar as the 22nd deputy mayor of the KMC.
Fourcorporators had filed their nomination papers for the deputy mayoral election. However, at the last minute two corporators Ashok Dyandev Mane (Shiv Sena) and Alaka Jadhav (Shahu Swabhimani Aghadi) withdrew their nomination from the contest.
In the mayoral election, ruling Tararanee Aghadi had enough strength to elect their group mayor. However, cross voting by a number of corporators benefited Shahu Swabhimani Aghadi whose's strength was only 22 in the House before the election.
The newly elected mayor was chairman of the KMC School Board Committee but she was removed from the post through a no-confidence motion by Tararanee Aghadi. Kawale then left the Aghadi to join Shahu Swabhimani Aghadi recently.
Mahadik, MLC, an industrialist-turned politician, was governing the KMC since 1990 and also succeeded to elect the last eight mayors according to his wish. However, this time he failed to maintain his hold in KMC politics in mayoral election.
