Cops `detain' accused's son for 2 days

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI NOVEMBER 17: A 12-year-old boy was allegedly detained for two days at the Bhoiwada police station to quiz him on his father's whereabouts. Anwarhul Haque, who has a stall at Fashion Street, was recently booked for allegedly buying stolen women's shirt pieces worth Rs 3.6 lakh.

While Haque's anticipatory bail plea was rejected today, he filed an affidavit stating that his son Afroz Ali had been detained on Sunday and Monday at the police station. Afroz told Newsline that on Sunday, at around 6.30 pm, two plainclothed policemen visited the Fashion street stall and asked him for his father. When Afroz told the police that his father was not in, the police took him in a white Maruti 800 (MH-01-B-3137) to Bhoiwada and detained him, claimed Afroz. On Monday, the police took Afroz to his Colaba residence and asked for his father. As Anwarhul was not at home, the police took Afroz back to the station.

Meanwhile, Anwarhul moved the sessions court on Monday seeking anticipatory bail, and the court directedthe police not to arrest him till Tuesday. In his affidavit, Anwarhul said he and his advocate Chandrabhushan Mishra got his son released from the police at 9.00 pm. Anwarhul added that the police did not question him in connection with the case he had been booked for.

Flatly denying the allegation, Senior Police Inspector V N Patil said Afroz had been picked up from his residence on Sunday and taken only for questioning to the station as his father was not present at the time. The police claimed that Afroz had been let off the same day and had been dropped home by a constable.

Rejecting Haque's anticipatory bail plea, Additional Sessions Judge Abhay Thipsay said on October 14, 1,200 shirt pieces valued at Rs 300 each were stolen from MJ International, Parel. The Bhoiwada police arrested main accused Mohammed Hanan Shahbuddin Khan from Ganesh Murti Nagar, Colaba. Khan told the police that he had sold the shirts to Anwarhul for Rs 35,000, of which he had received only Rs 10,000 from Anwarhul.
