Kidambi, Hari give India a flying start

Express News Service
Kozhikode, Nov 17: Little Harikrishna provided cheers for the home crowd with a resounding victory over 18th seed Blehm Pawel of Poland in the first round of the NTPC-Triveni World Junior Chess Championship at Hotel Calicut Tower here today. Coming here as the 51st seed, Hari, the under-10 world champion two years ago, slowly drove the International Master from Poland to despair in the French Defence and pocketed the point in 29 moves.

``This was his first victory over an International Master,'' said Bobba, Harikrishna's coach. Pawel, with a rating of 2,420, went for the Tarrasch variation and chose a dubious line from the fifth move itself. ``He did not play the main line,'' said Hari. With opposite coloured bishops, Hari lured his opponent to grabbing a pawn and then won a piece on move 27. ``If he plays like this he will win this championship,'' said the Belgian coach, who was watching the game.

Equally impressive was Sunder Rajan Kidambi's sensational win over third seed Russian GM Mihail Kobalia, whohad played for the Russian team in the last Olympiad in Elista. Kidambi won an exchange for two pawns in the Larsen Opening and then positionally outplayed the GM in the ending.

Tejas Bakre of India lost in 33 moves to Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam. India's best hope Krishnan Sasikiran, the seventh seed here, took his own time to beat Groetz Harald (Aut) in Sicilian Defence in 50 moves.

PALLAVI BUNGLES: Instead of playing a move, she wasted a few precious seconds which proved costly for Pallavi Shah, who lost on `time' in a clearly drawn position against second seed WGM Iweta Radziewicz in the first round of the 15th World Junior Chess Championship at Calicut Tower Auditorium on Tuesday. Disappointed Pallavi felt bad about her loss. ``I cannot lose from that position, I unnecessarily wasted time''.

Results (Girls 1st round): Monica Bobrowska bt Jelena Miloradovic, Pallavi Shah lost to Iweta Radziewicz, Joanna Dworakowska bt Zivile Ciuksyte, Nina Dokhmanovic lost to Lakos Nikoletta, Hoang Thanh Trongbt Maria Kouvatsou, S Meenakshi lost to S Vijayalakshmi, Irina Krush bt Smalkovic Lejla, Swathi Mohota lost to Nguyen T Tuongvan, Xu Yuan Yuan bt Sanchez Sarai Caroli, Aarthie Ramaswamy lost to Ruth Sheldon, Jana Jackova bt Tania Stumberger, Sorli Maja drew Helene Riznar, Tatiana Ratcu bt Clarie Marchadour, Isabel Werner w/o Muthumani N Desilva, Jovanka Houska bt Narelle Szuveges, Oya Demirdag lost to Swathi Ghate, Koneru Humpy bt Sofia Henziques, Yuette Erwee bt Le Thi Phoung Lien.
