Indira Gandhi fellowships announced
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Fellowship has been awarded to Padma M Sarangapani from Bangalore and Bambang Sunarto from Indonesia for the year 1998.Sarangapani is a distinguished educationist and is working on a research piece titled ``Indigenous Knowledge and Knowledge Transmission: A study of Baiga Children''.
Sunarto, serving in the Indonesian Art College of Surakarta, is an artist, and also an expert on Indonesian traditional music and a music composer. His project is titled ``Indian Classical Music in the Classical Music Gamlan (orchestra) of Indonesia''.
The fellowship has been instituted by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA) in 1995. It carries a monthly stipend of Rs 12,000 for a period of two years besides travel expenses.
The previous recipients are Dilip Purushottam Chitre, K. Ayyappa Panikar and Ustad Fahimuddin Dagar.
Award for Pandit Jasraj
Pandit Jasraj was conferred the Modi award for art, culture and education for the year 1998 on Tuesday. The award, consisting of a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, a scroll and a silver shield, was presented by Union Minister for Urban Affairs and Employment Ram Jethmalani. The award-giving ceremony ended with a recital by the maestro.
