VADODARA, Nov 19: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Thursday suspended two of its employees on charges of dereliction of duty in connection with the demolition operation carried out behind Manek Park Society in Karelibaug.According to civic sources, assistant engineer C C Patel and surveyor from town planning department Ashok Patel had failed to carry out a survey of the land, which resulted in the VMC squad demolishing a structure, which was not an obstruction.
The sources said the demolition was carried out on the basis of a complaint that the structure was blocking the road. ``Although part of the structure was unauthorised, it was not on the road but on a storm water drain,'' a civic officer said.
The suspension comes following representation by BJP councillor Pandu Yadav and RJP councillor Gita Desai. While Yadav has demanded an inquiry to find out who was behind the operation, Desai has asked whether the affected would be given monetary compensation. They have claimed that the land was privately owned.
Desai has also criticised the VMC for cutting full-grown trees. A couple of trees were cut, while effecting demolition.
Meatless day: Members of the Sadhu Vaswani Mission have called upon the VMC to celebrate November 25, Sadhu T L Vaswani's birthday, as a `Meatless Day'. The appeal was made in a memorandum submitted to Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria, after members took out a rally on Thursday. The memorandum has also pointed out the fact that the VMC had named the chowk opposite the Bhavans School as Sadhu Vaswani Chowk. According to them, Vaswani's birthday is celebrated every year as `Meatless Day' throughout the world in around 200 branches of the Mission.
Appealing the VMC to keep slaughter houses closed and not allow slaughtered animals to be kept in the open, the members have also called for the need to prevent sale of live animals and birds.
