CHENNAI, Nov 25: The Tamil Nadu government would wait for the final verdict of the Madras High Court before recommending to the Centre cancellation of the licence issued to the copper smelting unit of the Sterlite India Industries at Tuticorin, the state Chief Minister M Karunanidhi told the assembly today.The Madras High Court, which ordered closure of the factory on Monday, has posted the case for further hearing on December 1. Replying to the points raised by the members, who wanted cancellation of the licence to the unit, Karunanidhi said his government also held the same views on the subject.
The government would wait till the final verdict of the court before taking any steps to close down the factory, he said.
Earlier Dr E S E Raman (TMC), K Subbarayan (CPI), L Santhanam (AIFB), S Thirunavukkarassu (MGR ADMK) and Dr K Krishnaswamy (Puthiya Tamizhagam) wanted the government to recommend to the Centre to cancel the licence given to the factory.
